What is the difference between the 2 tracks?
The beginners track is meant for those who don't have any experience participating in a hackathon. In order to make our hackathon accessible to beginners, participants in this track will get assigned one mentor per their group. This person will have been someone who already has experience participating in a Hackathon and will be able to guide others through the process. Our regular track is meant for those who have already attended a hackathon and are comfortable with the format.
Do we have to attend all hackathon events?
No. The only events everyone must attend are the opening and closing ceremonies. That being said, it is highly recommended you attend as many other events as possible to enrich your experience and what you get out of the hackathon.
What are workshops for?
Workshops will give you the chance to learn both technical skills as well as the civics behind the issues your project is aimed to help. While they are not mandatory, attending them will give you a better idea of the kind of project our judges will be looking for.
How are the winners determined?
Our judges will consist of a team of experienced individuals in both the technical and civics based aspects. They will be scoring each project based on their rubric. The top 2 projects from each category will be chosen as the winners.
What are the prizes?
There will be a prizes worth up to $5000. In addition, you will get the chance to present your idea to California State Controller Betty Yee.
